Actor and activist Deku was a black character on “The Walking Dead,” starring Daryl Dixon and played by actor George Takei, who died Wednesday at 87.
The character, played by the late actor Danny Jacobs, first appeared in a comic book adaptation in 1973, but took on a much larger role in the 1990s.
He also made appearances in “Black Mirror” and in the upcoming “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
On the “Walking Dead” series, Deku and his wife, Maggie, a nurse, were killed in the first episode of season 3.
Jacobs is survived by her two children, Christopher and Lulu.
In the comic book, Deuku was a soldier who was sent to Africa and died from wounds sustained fighting alongside Abraham Lincoln.
Jacobs’ character was based on his life, according to his son, Peter Jacobs.
“George Takei has been doing his bit and I think it’s been very fitting that we have his character,” Peter Jacobs told The Associated Press.
“I think it was a great honor and he was very proud of it.
He said he felt he had to do it and he did it, and he said he didn’t want anyone to see him like that.”
The family said the actor had been living in New York and had no plans to return.
He was an avid fan of “The Simpsons” and of the show.
“The Walking of Dead” creator Robert Kirkman called Jacobs’ death “heartbreaking.”
“I know he was proud of the character and he had no idea it was going to happen to him,” Kirkman said.
It was a shock, I guess, to find out that Deku had died,” Jacobs said.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2014, Jacobs said he was surprised by the death.”
It was a shock, I guess, to find out that Deku had died,” Jacobs said.
I miss him so much. “
We will never know what life was like without George Takeis Deku.
I miss him so much.
He always had a smile on his face and I miss the people he brought to life,” Emily Jacobs wrote.
In a statement released by the actor’s representative, Jacobs expressed his condolences.
“George was one of the most talented and charismatic actors of his generation, a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend,” the statement said.
Jacobs also tweeted that he would be “looking forward to making some new music soon.”
Deku, who appeared in “The Wire,” “Mork and Mindy,” “The X-Files,” “Lost” and “Parks and Recreation,” died Thursday in Los Angeles.
His funeral is being held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. at the church.
In addition to “The Walking Dead,” Jacobs had appeared in other television shows, including “Marry Me,” “Luther” and the hit “The Blacklist.”
He also voiced a character in the hit film “Black Widow,” opposite D.B. Weiss.
